About Christina Stapley
Christina has grown herbs for
30 years, studying
their place in history and tutoring historical
herb workshops. In 1999, she undertook a further five years of study to
attain her BSc Honours degree in Phytotherapy
(science-based Western herbal medicine).
Her
qualification in 2004 involved a preparative year
followed by four of intensive study, including clinical
experience in the London Herbal Clinic. She also gained
clinical training in the Dermatology and Chest Clinics
at Whipps Cross Hospital. Studies included anatomy,
physiology, biochemistry, medicine, clinical and
differential diagnosis, pharmacy and pharmacology; in
addition to the biochemistry, actions, indications,
contraindications of many herbs, and their possible
interactions with drugs. As a phytotherapist, she has
been trained to work with doctors and their
prescriptions.
As a
member of the College of Practitioners of Phytotherapy,
Christina has comprehensive professional insurance and
follows their strict code of ethics. The College is
working with the European Herbal Practitioners
Association towards quality control and statutory
regulation of herbal medicine. Her Membership of the
College also requires additional ongoing professional
development with regular seminars. This helps to keep
her knowledge updated on the latest research in applied
herbal medicine. Some seminars are also open to other
health professionals, including doctors.
She
keeps detailed records of the 120 herbs in her dispensary.
These include their constituents, any clinical trials of
those herbs and possible interactions with drugs that
might also be prescribed by a GP. Christina also continues with historical research for
a thorough understanding of possible actions and
potential benefit of each herb.
